If I remember correctly the "reference" value is something like the average of the first three trials at the task for every user. It's been a while since I've seen cognitivefun here, but he's the guy to ask if that is what you are talking about.

Which, seeing as during the first three performances you're either stuck in a game's lower levels or still learning how to play it, makes the % progress change statistics of limited use.
