Prose Mnemonics
Prose Mnemonics
I've been curious for a while if all of this energy and interested in brain games and mnemonics will have any real effect on my life. Though I'm sure I can whip out some number mnemonics if I need to memorize a phone number and I'm prepared for an onslaught of boxes and phones, I was wondering if you guys had any insight on something more immediately practical without entering into the debate over the merits of dual n-back or quad-crab n-back.
Have any of you stumbled upon or learned about any mnemonic devices or strategies for reading that extend beyond the usual: take notes and review. I think that we spend enough time learning how to do things with our brains that we should really be able to ditch the pen and pencil.
Let me qualify this statement with the fact that I'm not interested in hearing the about twice-recycled articles on numbering the Presidents--that is mundane and easy (number mnemonic + association with name). I'm interested in both memorizing more abstract material but I'm also interested in verbatim memorization.
Students memorize poems, speakers memorize speeches, actors memorize lines... but is there an easier method than simply by rote? There are even poetry memorizing events in various memory competitions, but I have not yet stumbled upon anything significant (Googling "memorizing poems" only yields a million suggestions to repeat a few lines at a time.

A possible treasure trove in Memory Observed: Remembering in Natural Context. Ulric Neisser and Ira Hyman.

I'll start off with an idea: the example poem on the usamemorychampionship site is about 75 words. It seems like a memory palace of 75 would be doable so, to memorize this poem quickly, I'd use a letter mnemonic to place each first letter in my memory palace then recite the poem a few times to give me some intuition on what the individual important words are. This is like a method from a few websites where they suggest writing down the first letter of each word and recalling the text by filling in what those words should be.
