The mental fatigue/burnout that you're experiencing is for the most part normal. After a good rest you should start to see some improvement. In my case I suspect that I've been over training for the last 2 months so I've cut the training back to about 3 days per week (vs 5-6 days per wk) and the gains are slowly starting to creep in (reading span has increased slightly from 6.5 to 7 and I've gotten a little better at the simultaneous spatial memory updating task). Train hard but make sure you're getting adequate rest and nutrition. Good luck :)

Wow just got burned on reading span 8 got the 1st trial but misspelled words on the 2nd and 3rd trials. I'm pissed but at the same time glad that I've improved a little. I hope that it's a genuine improvement instead of a practice effect (I try to keep at least a 3 week gap between span tests).

Whats the record on RST anyway?
moeman | 6 months ago Reply
7, I think. Your recall times are quite slow - are you the world's worst typist?
cevapcici | 6 months ago Reply
Span record beat (well slightly so its no big deal) took all I had plus intuition.
moeman | 6 months ago Reply
Your score isn't even bold. Are you sure you really want to call that a record-beater? If so, I have some bad news... ;-)
? | 6 months ago Reply
Lol, laughing at the not bold part lol. You're right It doesn't deserve to be called a record-beater just got a little excited due to setting a new personal best thats all. I think I'll train some more and read material that I do not normally read (I tend to read mostly difficult technical stuff and shy away from literature) and see If I improve again in another few weeks or so.

"7, I think."
No. It's 8. Let me show you...

With 100% correct, I typed a word a second, roughly.
argumzio | 6 months ago Reply
Wow, nice. Although I'm not too surprised as you seem to exhibit a very high level of verbal ability in your posts.

Great job

I would attempt it again and try not to make any spelling errors but I don't feel like typing and don't want to induce any practice effects so I'll come back to it in another 2 weeks or so.

[Not caring about how threads tend to derail themselves by taking up a third rail here and there like normal conversation, I'll answer.]

Where are you getting this "practice effects" for RST? Nowhere in the literature have I seen this mentioned, even though it is true that such effects can be seen for other ECTs (RST isn't an ECT), like the Flanker task and other skill-based tasks (e.g., arithmetic) which leads to lower g-loading through "practice".

While there may be sparse repetition in cogfun's RST, I don't see much in the way of practice effects emerging in the course of taking numerous sessions in succession. However, if this is your point (that sentences re-appear after a while), then I agree with you.
argumzio | 6 months ago Reply
Yeah you're right I just got a little paranoid because I have improved considerably the last two times I took the test. Looks like the training/hard work is starting to pay off.
moeman | 6 months ago Reply
I've found that I can alter the extent to which I'm consciously aware of what I have to type - typing without thinking/sub-vocalising may be trainable and may free up WM for memorisation (eg. for reciting the memorised words rather than subvocalising what one is typing). Finding the right strategy may matter.
cevapcici | 6 months ago Reply
lol. The task does not accept spelling errors so I usually check over what I typed very carefully (sometimes that doesn't even work).
moeman | 6 months ago Reply
Nice, 5-simultaneous @ 80%?

Guess I gotta step my game up...
vast | 6 months ago Reply
Thanks. It was frustrating as hell coming really close to beating 5 boxes but not quite doing it.

You're Cyberiad right? I've seen your PASAT times and man I wish I could crunch numbers that fast. I've beat PASAT 7 (standard) a few times but still am not satisfied with my speed.
moeman | 6 months ago Reply
Yes, "I" am cyberiad. Hmmm, I'm not sure if anyone cares/has been paying attention but with the little I've posted on this forum... I've managed to create quite an eccentric persona

And all of it has been fabricated: deaf parents, sleep habits, excessive daydreaming/wanderings, boundless n-back sessions, emotional(lol)breakdowns, allergies. Lies. All of them. :-P

Again, dunno if anyone cares... but I've gotten kinda tired of the absurdity

Thanks!

Wait you had all these problems and they are gone because of n back? or u have these problems because of n back. ur comment was very confusing to me pls clarify if you will thanks.!
NBack4UrBraneZ | 6 months ago Reply
He very clearly said these characteristics were fabricated. In other words, they're lies created for his own amusement. Even if they did "go away" after training that wouldn't implicate training as the cause of their going away.
? | 6 months ago Reply
My advice to you would be to knock the training on the head and set up a small haberdashery.

I can't say I'm surprised. In fact, I thought this all along.
? | 6 months ago Reply
Yeah errors all over the place. Anyway, I've been learning a lot lately.
vast | 6 months ago Reply
It's not like it really matters one way or the other, though.

Avatar seems to put forward some kind of critique of US foreign policy - it's done very subtly tho', so you'll have to wait until your 15th viewing to make it out.

BrainMaster2 | 6 months ago Reply
Yea whats on your mind man.

BTW is topping out the differentiation span task a common occurrence? It's not a big deal as I did it by means of luck and a little intuition just curious as to whether its common or not that's all.
moeman | 6 months ago Reply
" BTW is topping out the differentiation span task a common occurrence?"
It's not particularly common, though at least a couple of people have managed it before.
cevapcici | 6 months ago Reply
I see you've topped it out also. I've seen some of your other scores here and I've got to admit you are quite the monster :)
moeman | 6 months ago Reply
DST feels exceedingly simple to me, but then again, I think it's silly.
argumzio | 6 months ago Reply
Yeah you're right its not too tough of a task just something to do while bored lol
moeman | 6 months ago Reply
Hey, let's not be too quick to minimise our achievements.
cevapcici | 6 months ago Reply
The problem is that it doesn't FEEL like an achievement. :-P
argumzio | 6 months ago Reply
lol
cevapcici | 6 months ago Reply
Moeman, you must be (extremely) new here. "BrainMaster2" is a hopeless case. Don't waste your time.
? | 6 months ago Reply
Thanks i will continue...my n-back training...i try find something usefull from brain audios...so far i am lost with them..meaning that i have loads of them and i am not really shure if they are any good for increasing iq or not..
? | 6 months ago Reply
So where's the top end at Dif. Task Span? 30?
pardica | 6 months ago Reply
Uh, yeah. You were asking the wrong "?" (above), by the way.
