21 yr old w inattentive ADHD NEEDS ADVICE
Hey so I'm a 21 year old college w serious inattentive adhd. My motor skills, working memory, and 'presence' (in terms of mindfulness/conciousness) is weak. I have very strong abstract thinking but math/science/languages (in that order) are harder for me.

What would be the best exercise regimen for someone in my circumstance?

No problem! You can get some used textbooks for cheap online, or you can also find a few PDF files of textbooks available for download from reputable archives. There are even a few math problem generators out there. Just make sure you work out the problems with that dying art known as handwriting!! :D

BTW, I found that this helped me when I bought an Intermediate Algebra book after about a decade of doing almost no math since high school. So at least for me, it didn't have to be super complex problems to really improve my concentration.

Yeah so just go back to the basics and re learn math from x grade - onwards? That seems plausible and your way up until you can conceptually understand calculus/physics. seems fun-ish too.. thats a good plan right

Actually, I remembered I got a pre-algebra and Beginning Algebra book before the Intermediate Algebra book. So even math of that early level helped!

Hi jpgut, here's my ideas. I've had similar problems, and I hope that what's helped me will help you too.

1) Be sure you have the basics for good mental functioning down:

-Get enough sleep

-Get some exercise

20 minutes of light daily exercise, like walking, can work wonders for your cognitive performance. Strength training, like push-ups and pull-ups, can help too.

-Eat a nutritious diet (with enough calories)

You can find calculators online for how many calories a person your size should get.

-Avoid drugs and alcohol. Some people function just fine despite taking drugs and alcohol habitually, but I and many others don't, and you might not either.

2) Practice doing math, working out the problems by hand. Math requires you to organize your approach to the task at hand. No matter how powerful your brain may be, you need to be able to apply it in a focused way to be successful in almost anything.

Writing by hand has also been shown to improve executive function and focus. Plus, it exercises the cerebellum, which is involved in motor functioning as well as planning and other executive functions. So working out math by hand can be very powerful, I think.

Some parts of the brain are involved in both arithmetic and verbal ability. I've seen my language ability improve with math practice. Maybe you will, too!

3) Practice concentrating in other ways. Avoid meditation, which increases mind wandering at least for beginners. Instead, do things that demand your focus. Some examples:

-This website! Especially N-Back and PASAT, I think.

-kendama or juggling

-reading and understanding complex material

-FPS and rhythm video games for short periods, if you are disciplined enough to treat it as training and not play it all the time, which could cause your brain to crave high stimulation.

TLDR for above:

1. Use this site, especially N-Back and PASAT, but all are good.

2. Do math exercises by hand.

3. Read complex material.

4. Play video games, which reward you right away for focusing intensely. For example, FPS and rhythm games.
