Flanker test added
I have added the Eriksen Flanker test since a reader suggested it. The simple variant only demonstrates what it's like; I have doubts regarding whether it is a generalizable skill, but nevertheless it's worth checking out. There was a paper about the heritability of the interference experienced during the Stroop vs. the Flanker test, with the former being much more genetically determined.

The user named "zenden" has reached 7-back on both the first n-back variant and Jaeggi/Buschkuehl dual n-back tasks. This is absolutely incredible. I haven't spent much time playing with those tests myself since I was working on other things, but when I think about it 7-back still seems like an impossible feat. This is already well beyond the "magic number 7" capacity. How far can it go? Either it approaches a theoretical limit, or chunking starts to occur. Chunking would be an undesirable distraction from the real effects of the test.
In any case, there aren't many ways to test the generalization of expanded [something] capacity as a result of training with these tests. The same problem goes for any "brain game" out there. While standard IQ tests can be somewhat useful as a measurement, I would suspect that even IQ tests can be categorized as domain specific skills and don't tell enough. A better test would be along the lines of swapping symbols in the memory and drawing comparisons. That will probably be the test, after the next next, or, 3 tests down?
That reminds me of a couple of those reading tests, which would be harder to write, but would probably involve more generalizable skills. Oh no, which order should it be?
