Simple volume changer added to the Jaeggi/Buschkuehl n-back test.
TimM has scored over 70% on the single 7-back test.
The user named "anonymous" is consistently in 6-back on the J/B. Utterly amazing.

I've spent 578 minutes on the dual n-back exercise (on another site) since 5/17/08. In addition acting as my own guinea pig I took an informal IQ test from Test Your IQ by Hans Eysenck at the start. Thus far I've found that I seem to improve in terms of score on 2, 3, or 4 with each session. If I focus sufficiently I can score 100% on the 2 back pretty easily. I'm now oscillating between 3 and 4 back trials rarely falling back to 2. On 20 trials I've achieved perfect scores on 3 back. Further as far as I can tell I'm not cheating in terms of chunking. However I don't see how you could progress past 4 back without finding some way of chuncking since you are primarily utilizing your short term memory, unless you have an expansion slot.

An interesting anecdote, after taking the first IQ test (which I'm not taking to seriously) I spent a weekend playing GTA IV and did not perform any dual n-back exercises for three days (Friday plus the weekend.) That Sunday I took another IQ test (after my GTA and McDonald's binge) from the book referenced above and scored lower by 5 points. The following week I spent 129 minutes on the dual n-back (and less on GTAIV), took another IQ test and my score shot up from the previous score by 13 points. I'm not studying the explanations to the answers I got wrong, I purposefully avoid that.
